One day we were sitting with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when there appeared before us a man whose clothes were exceedingly white and whose hair was exceedingly black...
No signs of journey were to be seen on him and none of us knew him. He walked up to the Prophet ﷺ, rested his knees against his knees and placed hands on his thighs...
O Muhammad, tell me about Islam.
Jibreel (Angel Gabriel)
Islam is to testify that there is no god but Allah and Muhammad is the messenger of Allah, to perform the prayers, to pay the zakat, to fast in Ramadan, and to make the pilgrimage to the House if you are able to do so.
Prophet Muhammad ﷺ
You have spoken rightly.
Jibreel (Angel Gabriel)
We were amazed at him asking and then confirming the answer himself! But he continued...
Then tell me about Iman (faith).
Jibreel (Angel Gabriel)
It is to believe in Allah, His angels, His books, His messengers, the Last Day, and to believe in divine decree, both the good and the evil thereof.
Prophet Muhammad ﷺ
You have spoken rightly.
Jibreel (Angel Gabriel)
Again, we were amazed at this pattern of questioning and confirming!
Then tell me about Ihsan.
Jibreel (Angel Gabriel)
It is to worship Allah as if you are seeing Him, and while you cannot see Him, you truly know that He is seeing you.
Prophet Muhammad ﷺ
You have spoken rightly.
Jibreel (Angel Gabriel)
Then tell me about the Hour.
Jibreel (Angel Gabriel)
The one questioned about it knows no better than the questioner. But I will tell you about its signs: when the slave woman gives birth to her master, and when the barefooted, naked, destitute shepherds compete in constructing lofty buildings.
Prophet Muhammad ﷺ
Then he (the inquirer) went away and I stayed for a long while. Then he (the Prophet ﷺ) asked: 'O Umar, do you know who the questioner was?' I said: 'Allah and His Messenger know best.' He said: 'He was Jibreel, who came to teach you your religion.'
This great hadith teaches us the three foundations of religion: Islam (outward actions), Iman (beliefs of the heart), and Ihsan (excellence in worship). Jibreel came in human form to teach the companions their religion, providing a comprehensive framework for Islamic life.
