Arrogance (Kibr)
Arrogance is one of the most destructive diseases of the heart. It involves rejecting the truth and looking down upon others with contempt.
Definition
The Prophet ﷺ defined arrogance as "rejecting the truth and despising people" (Muslim). It is a disease that prevents one from accepting guidance and recognizing their own faults.
Signs of Arrogance
- Refusing to accept the truth when it comes from someone perceived as "lesser"
- Looking down on others due to wealth, status, knowledge, or lineage
- Feeling superior to others in worship or righteousness
- Difficulty in accepting criticism or advice
- Unwillingness to apologize or admit mistakes
Islamic Perspective
Allah says in the Quran: "And do not turn your cheek [in contempt] toward people and do not walk through the earth exultantly. Indeed, Allah does not like everyone self-deluded and boastful." (Luqman 31:18)
The Prophet ﷺ warned: "No one who has the weight of a seed of arrogance in his heart will enter Paradise." (Muslim)
