Definition
Cowardness in Islamic context refers to the inability to act courageously when faith, justice, or moral principles are at stake. It manifests as avoiding righteous action due to fear of worldly consequences.
Signs of Cowardness
- Avoiding speaking the truth when it might bring personal cost
- Failing to enjoin good and forbid evil out of fear
- Abandoning religious duties due to social pressure
- Remaining silent when witnessing injustice
- Prioritizing worldly safety over spiritual obligations
- Avoiding jihad (struggle) in all its forms when called upon
Islamic Perspective
Allah says in the Quran: "O you who believe! If you support Allah, He will support you and plant your feet firmly." ( Muhammad 47:7)
The Prophet ﷺ said: "The believer is not one who eats his fill while his neighbor goes hungry." This requires courage to act for others' welfare.
Allah also warns: "And whoever turns away from My remembrance - indeed, he will have a depressed life." (Ta-Ha 20:124)
Types of Cowardness
- Physical cowardness: Avoiding physical danger when defending truth
- Moral cowardness: Failing to speak against wrongdoing
- Spiritual cowardness: Avoiding difficult acts of worship
- Social cowardness: Conforming to society against Islamic principles
Treatment
- Remember Allah's promise: Trust that Allah protects those who strive for His cause
- Study Islamic history: Learn from the courage of the Prophets and righteous predecessors
- Start small: Begin with small acts of courage to build confidence
- Seek good company: Surround yourself with courageous believers
- Make dua: Ask Allah for strength and courage
- Remember the Hereafter: Focus on eternal consequences over temporary worldly fears
