Envy (Hasad)
Envy is resenting others for the blessings Allah has bestowed upon them and wishing for those blessings to be removed from them.
Definition
Hasad is the feeling of resentment when seeing others blessed with good things, accompanied by a desire for those blessings to be taken away from them.
Signs of Envy
- Feeling upset when others succeed or receive blessings
- Speaking negatively about others' achievements
- Trying to diminish others' accomplishments
- Feeling joy when others face difficulties
- Competing unhealthily with others
Islamic Perspective
Allah says: "And from the evil of an envier when he envies." (Al-Falaq 113:5)
The Prophet ﷺ warned: "Beware of envy, for envy devours good deeds just as fire devours wood." (Abu Dawud)
Treatment
- Seek refuge in Allah: Recite the protective verses (Mu'awwidhatayn)
- Make du'a for the envied person: Pray for their continued blessings
- Remember Allah's wisdom: Trust that Allah distributes blessings wisely
- Practice gratitude: Focus on your own blessings
- Understand divine decree: Accept Allah's distribution of favors
- Purify intention: Work on improving yourself rather than competing
