Hypocrisy is showing Islam outwardly while concealing disbelief, corruption, or insincerity in the heart.
Definition
Nifaq refers to the contradiction between one's outward appearance of faith and inner reality, whether through disbelief or moral corruption.
Types of Hypocrisy
- Major Hypocrisy: Outward profession of Islam while inwardly disbelieving
- Minor Hypocrisy: Insincerity in worship and behavior while being a believer
Signs of Hypocrisy
- Speaking differently in different company
- Showing off in worship
- Breaking promises and lying habitually
- Being trustworthy only when it benefits oneself
- Having different standards for oneself versus others
Islamic Perspective
Allah says: "And of the people are some who say, 'We believe in Allah and the Last Day,' but they are not believers." ( Al-Baqarah 2:8)
The Prophet ﷺ said: "The signs of a hypocrite are three: when he speaks, he lies; when he promises, he breaks his promise; and when he is entrusted, he betrays." (Bukhari)
Treatment
- Sincere self-examination: Honestly evaluate your intentions and actions
- Consistent behavior: Align your private and public conduct
- Seek forgiveness: Regularly repent for insincerity
- Purify intentions: Make all actions solely for Allah's pleasure
- Study Islamic character: Learn about genuine Islamic behavior
- Avoid showing off: Perform good deeds sincerely without seeking recognition
