Hardness of the heart is a condition where the heart becomes unmoved by the Quran, dhikr, or acts of compassion.
Definition
A spiritually hardened heart that no longer responds to Islamic guidance, reminders of death, or calls to righteousness.
Signs of a Hard Heart
- Feeling unmoved by Quranic recitation
- Lack of emotion during prayer or dhikr
- Indifference to others' suffering
- Rarely shedding tears from fear of Allah
- Feeling distant from Islamic teachings
Islamic Perspective
Allah says: "Then your hearts became hardened after that, being like stones or even harder." (Al-Baqarah 2:74)
The Prophet ﷺ said: "Do not talk too much without mentioning Allah, for too much talk without remembrance of Allah hardens the heart." (Tirmidhi)
Treatment
- Increase Quran recitation: Read with contemplation and understanding
- Regular dhikr: Remember Allah frequently throughout the day
- Visit the sick and dying: Witness the reality of life's fragility
