Definition
Laziness in Islamic terms refers to the reluctance or unwillingness to exert effort in fulfilling one's obligations to Allah, oneself, and society. It manifests as procrastination in worship and neglect of beneficial actions.
Signs of Laziness
- Delaying or skipping prayers
- Postponing reading the Quran or seeking knowledge
- Avoiding physical exercise or maintaining health
- Procrastinating on important tasks and responsibilities
- Preferring comfort and ease over beneficial effort
- Making excuses to avoid good deeds
- Feeling heavy and reluctant when called to prayer or good actions
Islamic Perspective
Allah says in the Quran: "And that there is nothing for man except what he strives for." (An-Najm 53:39)
The Prophet ﷺ said: "Allah loves, when one of you does a job, that he does it with excellence (ihsan)." (Al-Bayhaqi)
Allah also describes the hypocrites: "And when they stand up to prayer, they stand reluctantly." (An-Nisa 4:142)
The Prophet ﷺ sought refuge from laziness: "O Allah, I seek refuge in You from anxiety and sorrow, weakness and laziness." (Bukhari)
Causes of Laziness
- Lack of purpose: Not understanding the importance of actions
- Weak faith: Insufficient connection with Allah
- Poor physical health: Neglecting the body's needs
- Bad company: Being around unmotivated people
- Excessive comfort: Being too comfortable in one's situation
- Lack of discipline: Poor time management and habits
Treatment
- Set clear intentions: Remember why you are doing each action for Allah
- Start small: Begin with easy, manageable tasks and build momentum
- Create routines: Establish regular schedules for worship and work
- Seek Allah's help: Make dua for energy and motivation
- Improve physical health: Exercise, eat well, and get adequate sleep
- Find accountability: Work with others who encourage good habits
- Remember death: Reflect on the limited time available for good deeds
- Study the lives of the active: Learn from energetic role models in Islam
