Love of Fame
Seeking status and reputation over Allah's pleasure.
Love of Fame (Hubb al-Jah)
Love of fame is seeking status, reputation, and recognition from people rather than focusing on Allah's pleasure.
Definition
The excessive desire for social status, recognition, and being highly regarded by others, often at the expense of spiritual priorities.
Signs of Love of Fame
- Constantly seeking praise and recognition
- Feeling upset when others receive more attention
- Prioritizing reputation over righteousness
- Performing good deeds primarily for social recognition
- Comparing oneself to others in terms of status
Islamic Perspective
The Prophet ﷺ said: "Whoever seeks the pleasure of Allah by displeasing people, Allah will be pleased with him and will make people pleased with him." (Ibn Hibban)
Allah says: "And whoever desires the life of this world and its adornments - We fully repay them for their deeds therein, and they therein will not be deprived." (Hud 11:15)
Treatment
- Seek Allah's pleasure alone: Make all actions for Allah's sake, not people's approval
- Practice humility: Consciously avoid seeking recognition
- Remember death: Fame and status end with death
- Focus on the Hereafter: Prioritize eternal rewards over temporary recognition
- Avoid showing off: Perform good deeds privately when possible
- Study the lives of humble servants: Learn from those who shunned fame
