Showing Off (Riya)
Riya is performing acts of worship or good deeds to be seen and praised by people rather than seeking Allah's pleasure.
Definition
Riya means to perform acts of worship or righteous deeds with the intention of being seen, praised, or admired by people rather than purely for Allah's sake.
Signs of Riya
- Performing worship differently when people are watching
- Feeling disappointed when good deeds go unnoticed
- Seeking praise for religious acts
- Doing good deeds to maintain a religious reputation
- Feeling proud when people commend your worship
Islamic Perspective
Allah says: "So whoever would hope for the meeting with his Lord - let him do righteous work and not associate in the worship of his Lord anyone." (Al-Kahf 18:110)
The Prophet ﷺ said: "The thing I fear most for you is minor shirk." When asked what it was, he replied: "Riya." (Ahmad)
Treatment
- Purify intention: Constantly check and renew your intention for Allah alone
- Private worship: Increase acts of worship done in private
- Seek Allah's pleasure: Remember that only Allah's approval matters
- Avoid seeking praise: Don't fish for compliments about your deeds
- Remember the Hereafter: Focus on the eternal reward, not temporary praise
