Vanity (Ujb)

Ujb is being impressed with oneself and one's deeds, leading to self-admiration and spiritual pride.

Definition

Vanity is a state where one becomes excessively pleased with their own achievements, qualities, or deeds, often leading to spiritual stagnation.

Signs of Vanity

• Excessive self-satisfaction with one's worship or good deeds
• Comparing oneself favorably to others
• Feeling deserving of praise and recognition
• Difficulty accepting that others might be better
• Attributing success solely to personal effort

Islamic Perspective

The Prophet ﷺ said: "Three things are destructive: obeyed stinginess, followed desires, and a person's self-admiration. This last one is the most destructive." (Bayhaqi)

Allah says: "So do not claim yourselves to be pure; He is most knowing of who fears Him." (An-Najm 53:32)

Treatment

1. Remember Allah's grace: Attribute all success to Allah's guidance and help
2. Study your flaws: Regularly examine your shortcomings and mistakes
3. Seek forgiveness: Constantly ask Allah for forgiveness
4. Learn from others: Recognize that others may excel in areas you don't
5. Practice humility: Consciously work on being humble
6. Remember accountability: Remember you will be questioned about your deeds
