Meaning and categories of slaughter
**1. Definition:** **Linguistically:** Dhaba'ih (ذبائح) is plural of dhabīhah (ذبيحة), meaning "slaughtered animal." **Legally:** An animal that has been properly slaughtered according to Sharia. **Tadhkiyah (تذكية):** Slaughtering (or stabbing) an edible land animal within one's reach by cutting its throat and esophagus, or wounding an animal beyond reach. --- **2. Types of Tadhkiyah:** **A. Dhabh (ذَبح) - Throat Cutting:** Cutting the throat of the animal, with conditions. This is the method for most animals. **B. Nahr (نَحر) - Stabbing at the Base of Neck:** Cutting the labbah (لَبَّة) - the lower part of the neck. This is the Sunnah method for **camels**. **Evidence:** Allah says: "So pray to your Lord and sacrifice [nahr]" [Al-Kawthar: 2]. **C. 'Aqr (عَقر) - Wounding:** Killing an animal beyond one's reach (from game or livestock) by wounding it anywhere on its body - not the throat or labbah. **Evidence:** Rafi' narrated: A camel bolted, and a man shot it with an arrow and stopped it. The Prophet ﷺ said: "Whatever bolts from you, do likewise to it" [Agreed upon]. --- **3. Ruling:** Tadhkiyah is **obligatory** for any animal within one's reach - nothing is permissible from such animals without it. This is by consensus. **Evidence:** Allah says: "Prohibited to you are dead animals (maytah)" [Al-Ma'idah: 3] - and the unslaughtered is maytah. **Exception:** Fish, locusts, and sea creatures do not require slaughter, as mentioned earlier.
