Requirements for valid ila'
**1.** It must be from a husband who is capable of intercourse. It is not valid from one incapable of intercourse due to an incurable illness, paralysis, or castration. **2.** He must swear by Allah or one of His attributes - not by divorce, freeing a slave, or vow. **3.** He must swear to abstain from intercourse for more than four months. **4.** He must swear to abstain from vaginal intercourse. If he swore to abstain from anal intercourse, he is not considered muli (one who took ila'), because he has not abandoned the obligatory intercourse. **5.** The wife must be one with whom intercourse is possible. As for a woman with whom intercourse is impossible, like the ratqa' (whose vagina is closed) and the qarna' (who has an obstruction), ila' is not valid from her.
