Prohibited to you are dead animals, blood, the flesh of swine...
Foods explicitly prohibited
**General Principle:** Every food that is impure, disgusting, or harmful is forbidden. --- **1. The TEN Forbidden in the Quran:** Allah says: "Prohibited to you are dead animals, blood, the flesh of swine, that which has been dedicated to other than Allah, the strangled, the beaten, the fallen, the gored, what was eaten by predators - except what you slaughter [before death], and that slaughtered on stone altars" [Al-Ma'idah: 3]. | # | Item | Explanation | |---|------|-------------| | 1 | **Maytah (carrion)** | What died naturally without proper slaughter. Forbidden due to retained blood and impure nourishment. Permitted for necessity. *Exception: fish & locusts* | | 2 | **Blood** | Specifically poured/flowing blood. What remains in meat/veins is permissible. Liver and spleen are also permissible. | | 3 | **Pork** | Filthy animal that feeds on filth, with proven harms | | 4 | **Dedicated to other than Allah** | Slaughtered in another's name - shirk | | 5 | **Al-Munkhaniqah** | Strangled to death (intentionally or accidentally) | | 6 | **Al-Mawqūdhah** | Beaten to death with stick or heavy object | | 7 | **Al-Mutaraddiyah** | Fallen from height to death | | 8 | **Al-Natīhah** | Gored to death by another animal | | 9 | **What predators ate from** | Attacked by lion, tiger, wolf, etc. | | 10 | **Slaughtered on Nusub** | Stones around the Ka'bah for pagan sacrifices | **Note:** For items 5-9, if caught alive and properly slaughtered, they become permissible. --- **2. Additional Forbidden Foods:** | # | Category | Examples | |---|----------|----------| | 1 | **Harmful substances** | Poison, alcohol, intoxicants | | 2 | **Cut from live animal** | "Whatever is cut from an animal while alive is carrion" [Ahmad, Abu Dawud] | | 3 | **Predatory beasts (fangs)** | Lion, wolf, tiger, leopard, dog | | 4 | **Predatory birds (talons)** | Eagle, hawk, falcon, kite, owl | | 5 | **Carrion-eating birds** | Vulture, crow | | 6 | **Animals commanded to kill** | Snake, scorpion, mouse, kite | | 7 | **Domestic donkeys** | Forbidden at Khaybar | | 8 | **Disgusting creatures** | Mouse, snake, fly, wasp, bee | | 9 | **Jallālah** | Animals that mostly eat impurities | **Evidence for predators:** "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade every beast with fangs and every bird with talons" [Muslim]. **Jallālah ruling:** If isolated from impurities and fed pure food, it becomes permissible. Ibn Umar would isolate them for 3 days.
