Stay in your house until the term reaches its end
Obligations for a widow observing waiting period
**Obligations for the Widow in Iddah:** 1. **Must Observe Iddah in the House of Death:** She must observe her waiting period in the house where her husband died while she was residing there - even if rented or borrowed. **Evidence:** The Prophet ﷺ said to Furay'ah bint Malik: "Stay in your house until the term reaches its end" [Tirmidhi, Ibn Majah - authenticated]. In another narration: "Stay in your house where the news of your husband's death came to you..." She may only move to another place if there is a valid excuse, such as fearing for herself by staying there, or being forced out, or similar circumstances - in which case she may move wherever she wishes due to necessity. 2. **Must Stay in the House:** She must remain in the dwelling where she is observing her waiting period and not leave except for need. She may go out for her needs during the day but not at night, because night is a time associated with potential wrongdoing, so she should not go out at night without necessity. Daytime, however, is the time for fulfilling needs. 3. **Obligatory Mourning (Ihdad):** She must observe mourning for her husband for the duration of the waiting period. The details of mourning rulings will follow. 4. **No Maintenance:** She is not entitled to maintenance because the marital bond has ended with death.
