Ruling of Divorce

The default ruling for divorce is that it is permissible and allowed when there is necessity and need for it - such as the woman's bad character and poor treatment. **Disliked:** It is disliked without need, because it removes the marriage contract which contains many recommended benefits - such as protecting chastity, seeking offspring, and other benefits. **Prohibited:** Divorce is prohibited in some cases, as will be explained in the discussion of innovated divorce (talaq bid'i). **Obligatory:** Divorce may become obligatory on a person - such as when the wife is not upright in her religion, for example if she abandons prayer and he cannot correct her.
