Legitimate reasons to be excused
Excuses that remove the obligation of jihad (whether Fard 'Ayn or Kifayah): **1-2. Insanity and Childhood** - **Hadith:** "The pen is lifted from three: from the insane until he regains sanity, from the child until he reaches puberty, and from the sleeper until he wakes" **3. Being Female** - Jihad is not obligatory on women **4. Being a Slave** - **Hadith of Abu Hurayrah:** "The righteous slave has two rewards. By the One in Whose hand is my soul, were it not for jihad in the path of Allah, and Hajj, and being dutiful to my mother, I would have loved to die as a slave" [Bukhari] **5-6. Physical Weakness and Financial Inability** - Illness, blindness, severe lameness - Already mentioned in conditions **7. Lack of Parental Permission** - When jihad is voluntary (not Fard 'Ayn) - **Hadith of Ibn Amr رضي الله عنهما:** A man came to the Prophet ﷺ asking permission for jihad. He said: "Are your parents alive?" He said: "Yes." He said: "Then strive (do jihad) in serving them" [Bukhari & Muslim] - Reason: Dutifulness to parents is Fard 'Ayn; voluntary jihad is Fard Kifayah - If jihad becomes Fard 'Ayn, their permission is not required **8. Debt Without Creditor's Permission** - When jihad is voluntary - **Hadith:** "Being killed in the path of Allah expiates everything except debt" [Muslim] - If jihad becomes Fard 'Ayn, creditor's permission is not required **9. Being the Only Scholar** - If there is no scholar more knowledgeable in the town - People would be in need if he is killed - Jihad becomes excused due to the Muslims' need for him
