Two conditions and five methods
**Two Conditions:** **1.** The land must not have been owned by a Muslim. If it was, it is forbidden to claim it by revival except with legal permission. **2.** The reviver must be Muslim. A disbeliever may not revive dead land in the land of Islam. --- **Five Methods of Revival:** **1. Enclosure:** If he surrounds it with a sturdy wall as is customary, he has revived it. - **Hadith:** "Whoever encloses land with a wall, it is his" [Abu Dawud - sahih] **2. Digging a Well:** If he digs a well in dead land and reaches water, he has revived it. If he doesn't reach water, he has priority. Likewise if he digs a canal in it. **3. Bringing Water:** If he brings water to dead land by channeling it from a spring, river, or other source, he has revived it. **4. Planting Trees:** If he plants trees in it when it was previously unsuitable for planting - he cleaned and planted it - he has revived it. **5. Custom:** Some scholars say revival is not limited to these methods. It returns to custom - whatever people consider revival is revival.
