**Linguistic Definition:** Reconciliation - i.e., cutting off disputes. **Legal Definition:** The contract by which disputes between disputants are ended. **Evidence from Quran:** - "Settlement is good" [4:128] - "If two parties among the believers fall into a quarrel, make peace between them" [49:9] - "There is no good in much of their private conversation except for those who enjoin charity, good deeds, or making peace between people. Whoever does that seeking Allah's pleasure, We will give him a great reward" [4:114] **Evidence from Sunnah:** - **Hadith:** "Settlement is permissible between Muslims except a settlement that permits something forbidden or forbids something permitted" [Abu Dawud, Tirmidhi - hasan sahih, Ibn Majah] **Consensus:** The ummah has unanimously agreed on the permissibility of settlement between people seeking Allah's pleasure and then the disputants' satisfaction.
