These are the limits of Allah, so do not approach them
Linguistic and legal meaning
**Linguistic Meaning:** Hadd (plural: Hudud) means "prevention/restriction." Hudud Allah (Allah's limits) are His prohibitions that He forbade approaching and violating. Allah says: "These are the limits of Allah, so do not approach them" [Al-Baqarah: 187]. They are called "Hudud" (limits) because they prevent one from committing the acts for which they are prescribed. --- **Legal Definition:** A punishment fixed by Sharia for the sake of Allah's right. Or: A punishment fixed by Sharia for a sin, to prevent falling into the same sin or similar offenses for which the punishment was legislated.
