What is racing and its permissibility
**Definitions:** - **Sabaq:** What contestants wager on in horse and camel racing and archery - whoever wins takes it - **Musabaqah:** Racing between animals or others - **Munadhalah/Nidhal:** Competition in shooting arrows, etc. **Ruling:** Racing is **permissible** by Quran, Sunnah, and consensus. **Evidence from Sunnah:** - **Hadith of Ibn Umar رضي الله عنهما:** "The Prophet ﷺ raced horses that had been prepared (trained/conditioned) from al-Hafya' to Thaniyyat al-Wada', and those that had not been prepared from Thaniyyat al-Wada' to the mosque of Banu Zurayq" [Bukhari & Muslim] - **Hadith:** "No prize (sabaq) except in camel racing, archery, or horse racing" [Abu Dawud, Nasa'i, Tirmidhi - sahih] - **Khuff:** Camel (has a pad/foot) - **Nasl:** Arrow with point - **Hafir:** Horse (has a hoof) **Consensus:** Muslims have unanimously agreed on the permissibility of racing in general.
