And the chaste women from those who were given the Scripture
Ruling on marrying Jewish or Christian women
Islam has permitted marrying free women from the People of the Book. **Evidence:** Allah says: "This day [all] good foods have been made lawful, and the food of those who were given the Scripture is lawful for you and your food is lawful for them. And [lawful in marriage are] chaste women from among the believers and chaste women from among those who were given the Scripture before you, when you have given them their due compensation" [Al-Ma'idah: 5] **Scholarly Consensus:** Scholars have unanimously agreed on the permissibility of marrying women of the People of the Book. **Who are the People of the Book?** The People of the Book whose women may be married are: the people of the Torah and the Gospel (Jews and Christians). **Evidence:** Allah says: "[We revealed it] lest you say: 'The Scripture was only sent down to two groups before us'" [Al-An'am: 156]
