Meaning and legality of freeing slaves
**Linguistic Meaning:** Al-'Itq (عتق) with kasrah on 'ayn and sukun on ta': freedom and liberation. Derived from: 'ataqa al-faras (the horse outran), 'ataqa al-farkh (the chick flew and became independent). **Technical Definition:** Freeing a slave and liberating him from bondage, removing ownership, and establishing freedom for him. **Evidence of Legality:** It is legislated by the Quran, Sunnah, and consensus. **Quran:** - Allah says: "then freeing a slave" [An-Nisa: 92] - Allah says: "freeing a slave before they touch one another" [Al-Mujadilah: 3] **Sunnah:** Abu Hurayrah رضي الله عنه reported from the Prophet ﷺ: "Whoever frees a slave, Allah frees every limb of his from the Fire, limb for limb, even his private parts for the slave's private parts" [Bukhari & Muslim] **Consensus:** The Ummah has unanimously agreed on the validity of manumission and its being a means of nearness to Allah.
