That they may mention Allah's name over what He has provided for them of livestock
Types of animals valid for sacrifice
The Udhiyah is only valid from livestock (bahimat al-an'am): **Types:** 1. **Camels** (Ibil) 2. **Cattle** (Baqar) 3. **Sheep** (Da'n) - includes goats (Ma'iz) **Evidence:** - **Quran:** "And for every nation We have appointed a rite, that they may mention Allah's name over what He has provided for them of livestock" [22:34] - Livestock (an'am) does not refer to anything other than these three types - Nothing has been transmitted from the Prophet ﷺ or any companion that they sacrificed anything else **Sharing:** **One Sheep:** - Suffices for one person and their household - **Hadith of Abu Ayyub رضي الله عنه:** "In the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, a man would sacrifice a sheep for himself and his household. They would eat and feed others" [Ibn Majah, Tirmidhi - sahih] **One Camel or Cow:** - May be shared by seven people - **Hadith of Jabir رضي الله عنه:** "We sacrificed with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in the year of Hudaybiyyah - a camel for seven and a cow for seven" [Muslim]
