Definition & Importance

**Importance:** The science of Fara'id is among the most important sciences. Muslims must pay attention to it and study it deeply, as the need for it is pressing. **Linguistic Meaning:** Fara'id (singular: Farida) is derived from 'fard' meaning 'assessment' or 'estimation'. As Allah says: "half of what you have assessed" [Al-Baqarah: 237] **Technical Definition:** Al-Fard: A share determined by Sharia for its recipient. **Science of Fara'id:** The knowledge of inheritance - its jurisprudence and the calculations leading to its division. **Al-Mawarith (Inheritance):** The right left by the deceased, transferred to the heir. **Important Obligation:** A Muslim must pay attention to inheritance matters and not dispose of them in ways that alter their Sharia-based allocation - making non-heirs inherit or depriving heirs of all or part of their rights, thus exposing himself to Allah's wrath and punishment.
