Allah has lifted fasting from the pregnant and breastfeeding woman
Exemption for pregnant and nursing mothers
**Ruling:** - If pregnant or breastfeeding woman fears for herself or her child, she may break fast **Evidence:** - **Hadith:** "Allah has lifted half the prayer from the traveler, and fasting from the traveler, pregnant, and breastfeeding" [Tirmidhi, Nasa'i, Ibn Majah] **Makeup Rules:** **1. Fear for herself only:** - Makes up the days (qada only) **2. Fear for herself AND child, or child only:** - Makes up the days (qada) - **Plus** feeds a poor person per day (fidyah) - **Hadith of Ibn Abbas:** "The pregnant and breastfeeding, if they fear for their children, break fast and feed" [Abu Dawud] **Summary of Excuses:** The four permissible excuses for breaking fast are: 1. Travel 2. Illness 3. Menstruation/Postpartum 4. Fear of harm (pregnant/breastfeeding)
