Fasting exemptions for the sick and elderly
**Recoverable Illness:** - May break fast - Must make up days after recovery - **Quran:** "Whoever is ill or traveling, then [an equal] number of other days" [2:184-185] - If they fast despite illness, it's valid **Permanent Illness / Old Age:** - If recovery is not expected - Or elderly cannot fast at all - They break fast and feed one poor person per day (fidyah) - **Quran:** "And upon those who are able [with hardship], a ransom of feeding a poor person" [2:184] **Fidyah Amount:** - Half a sa' (~1.125 kg) of wheat, dates, rice, or local staple per day **Types of illness permitting breaking fast:** 1. Fasting worsens the illness 2. Fasting delays recovery 3. Fasting causes severe hardship
