Five categories of wealth subject to Zakat
**1. Livestock (Bahimat al-An'am):** - Camels, cattle, sheep/goats - **Hadith:** "No owner of camels, cattle, or sheep who doesn't pay Zakat except they will come on Judgment Day larger and fatter, goring him with their horns and trampling him with their hooves..." [Muslim] **2. Gold & Silver (and Currency):** - Includes paper money that replaces them today - **Quran:** "Those who hoard gold and silver and don't spend in Allah's way—give them news of painful punishment" [9:34] - **Hadith:** "No owner of gold or silver who doesn't pay its due except on Judgment Day plates of fire will be made for him..." [Muslim] **3. Trade Goods ('Urud al-Tijarah):** - Everything prepared for buying and selling for profit - **Quran:** "Spend from the good things you have earned" [2:267] - Scholars say this verse refers to Zakat on trade goods **4. Grains & Fruits:** - **Grains:** All storable staple crops (wheat, barley, etc.) - **Fruits:** Dates and raisins - **Quran:** "And from what We brought forth for you from the earth" [2:267] - **Quran:** "Give its due on the day of harvest" [6:141] - **Hadith:** "What is watered by rain or springs: one-tenth. What is watered by irrigation: half of one-tenth" [Bukhari] **5. Minerals & Buried Treasure (Rikaz):** - **Minerals:** Anything from the earth of value (gold, silver, copper, etc.) - **Rikaz:** Buried treasures from pre-Islamic times - **Quran:** "And from what We brought forth for you from the earth" [2:267] - **Hadith:** "In rikaz (buried treasure) is one-fifth" [Bukhari & Muslim] - Scholars agreed on Zakat obligation for minerals
