Categories ineligible for Zakat
**1. The Wealthy:** - **Hadith:** "No share for the rich or strong earner" - Exception: Zakat workers and debtors for reconciliation may be wealthy **2. Strong Earners:** - Those capable of working and earning - Exception: Student of Islamic knowledge dedicating to study **3. Dependents:** - Parents, grandparents (ancestors) - Children, grandchildren (descendants) - Wife - Because paying them saves the giver from their obligatory support **4. Non-Muslims (except Mu'allafah):** - Zakat is for Muslim poor: "taken from their rich, returned to their poor" - Zakat builds Muslim community solidarity **5. Family of the Prophet ﷺ (Banu Hashim):** - **Hadith:** "It is not permissible for the family of Muhammad. It is only the filth of people" [Muslim] - Too honorable for charity - Banu Hashim only (correct opinion), not Banu Muttalib **6. Freed Slaves of Banu Hashim:** - **Hadith:** "Charity is not permissible for us, and the freed slaves of a people are from them" **7. Slaves:** - Master must support them - Exceptions: Mukatab (to pay for freedom), Zakat worker **Giving to these knowingly = sinful.**
