Burial Prohibitions

**Grave Marking:** - Raise grave about a handspan (shibr) in mound shape - May place stones to mark boundaries - Writing on graves disliked except for necessity **Prohibited Acts:** - Building structures on graves - Plastering graves with gypsum - Sitting on graves - Lighting graves (imitation of disbelievers) - Building mosques on/over graves - Praying at or toward graves **Hadith:** "Allah cursed the Jews and Christians; they took their prophets' graves as places of worship." **Disrespect Forbidden:** - Walking on graves - Stepping with shoes - Sitting on them **Hadith:** "That one sits on an ember burning his clothes to his skin is better than sitting on a grave." **After Burial:** - Sunnah to make du'a for the deceased - Ask for forgiveness and firmness - **Bid'ah:** Reciting Quran at the grave
